Jack Sparrow ( Johnny Depp) hasn’t had a whiff of good fortune in a long time. Has there been one or two more since the fourth one (Hell I don't even know the name of it.) Regardless I'm not interested in the franchise at all anymore, good bit of cinema history to some degree in my books but nothing else.Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Movie DescriptionĬapt. By this point it could pretty much be any other action movie and not part of an well-known franchise. I saw the fourth in cinemas but never again, it was a reboot pretty much, everything from the previous films not really meaning anything except a lil' backstory for Jack Sparrow. (Examples from the top of my head An Asian branch of pirates, "The Pirate King", Jack Sparrow's Father, "The Pieces of Eight") The third was definitely a plummet trying to, as you said, create wider aspects of the world the film takes place in - but which backfired and ended up being confusing. The three-way chase for the jar of dirt and the fight on the water-wheel was iconic. And they know if they have enough volume of people, they can amke anything work.įor me personally Dead Man's Chest is better than the first one the action was more intense and the stakes seemed higher. It's Disney, they don't need logic to make their movies work. I go for the fun.Īnd so personally, when everyone lauds the 1st movie while complaining about the rest of them, I challenge them to think if any of the other movies were made first, would they have rated it in their minds with a higher score? Again though, I am not looking for a documentary or historical realism when I go see a movie like this. I personally liked At World's end because it DID intertwine multiple stories about the fabled East India trading company along with british rule of the open waters along with pirates, and like you said, some mythology. Jack Sparrow is a drunk idiot, who happens to be smart at times and always finds his way out of problems in entertaining ways. To me, movies like these are meant to be taken at face value, and because of that, I probably enjoy them much more than the person who wants 'layers' as you say in #2. I don't feel like I have to 'think hard' about plots, or challenge the plot with thought to begin with. I am of the opinion that the movies were not made for the intention of winning oscars, but instead, made for entertainment of the audience. What made the 1st movie so fresh in terms of character, storyline and writing is its own downfall for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc if you consider it that way.in other words, if you were returning for more, you wanted something new, not more of the same. Getting 'into' character is something Depp does, indeed, do well. I think the latest film is the best one since Dead Man's Chest, but it suffers from the same stale writing. There are other smaller reasons, but these are the big three. On Stranger Tides was just straight up boring, staying on a depressing island the entire film. At World's End was way too long and bloated with crazy mythology, and lost the smaller magic of the first. In the first film he was a person you could understand, but later on he just became a drunk idiot who did nothing but stand on the sidelines he lost the layers. The sequels used the same jokes and the same mannerisms for Jake Jack Sparrow without creating anything new and it got tired. The writing became stale and, frankly, bad. The magic was lost a lot by the end and it was obvious Depp was relying on the franchise for star power, rather than doing it out of genuine interest. It became clear that after Dead Man's Chest, Depp started coming back for just a paycheck. Johnny Depp started phoning it in towards the end. However, there are a number of reasons why the sequels are considered far worse than the original. I don't think many people consider the sequels to be terrible films (except maybe On Stranger Tides). I haven't seen the fifth film, but I guess after the fourth, I'll just consider it ends with the third movie. Not too much to be said about On Stranger Tides, aside from Ian McShane is good as Blackbeard and the mermaid scene was cool. Kinda wish they can have more ship battle, but Dutchman vs Black Pearl in a maelstrom is fucking awesome. The final battle is where things finally get exciting. Having Jack and Barbossa together again at least keep it from being totally boring for me. The dark and grim beginning at first hooked me, but reaching the middle its starts to get tiring. Not to mention the unexpected ending and Barbossa's return.Īt World's End kind of lost the charm of the first two movies. Its a fun ride watching Jack giving his drunken banter with Will and Norrington again, Elizabeth become an action girl and the escape from cannibal island. Davy Jones and the Kraken really sold that movie for me. I have to admit I like Dead Man's Chest as much if not even more so than the first movie.
